Assignment 1
Date Due: August 30, 2000
Note: I apologize for not being available this
first week of class. I will be back in
town tomorrow (Thursday, 8/24), so feel free to email me with any questions,
problems or concerns. Next week I will
be in class to begin on chapter 1 of the textbook. Please complete as much of this assignment as you can this week,
to help get you familiar with the compiler we’ll be using, and prepared for
next week’s lecture and lab. If you
are unable to do parts 2-4 due to no home computer, and/or part 5 due to a
shortage of books, please mention that to me as you do part 1. See you next week!
Email me with the following information:
Name:
Social Security Number:
Email Address:
Programming Experience:
Personal Computer:
Be sure to give me your full name, and an email address that you check often that I can use for class announcements. For programming experience, I am looking for what languages you have programmed in, if any, or what other computer science courses you have taken, if any. This will help me to determine where to begin and at what speed to proceed. For personal computer, please respond yes or no to whether or not you have a computer at home or work on which you can do Part 2 - Part 4 below.
My email address is kathleen@cs.ucf.edu. The subject line of your email should be “Assignment 1”, so I can distinguish it from email questions you may have.
Go to www.borland.com/jbuilder/foundation and download the free JBuilder Foundation 3.5 compiler, documents, samples, and tools. This is the recommended compiler for the class. Download these four files, unzip them, and install them. Follow the directions on the Borland site to perform these tasks and to get your serial number to be able to run JBuilder.
In JBuilder, run the Welcome Project in the Help menu, to get an introductory tutorial to the JBuilder compiler.
In JBuilder, do the Hello World tutorial, steps 1 through 9. Go in the help menu and choose Help Topics. Select Tutorials from the help topics, then Tutorials under that topic. Go through the first 9 steps of “Building your first application”.
Get the class textbook, Java Software Solutions, as soon as possible and read chapter 1 for next class.
