Guidelines and Grading for the Research Paper
Below are the main areas for which you will graded Meeting or exceeding expectations in all of these areas will result in a grade of A. All papers are due in final format before the first presentation is given.
I: Is the paper journal
quality? 30%
1. Does the paper have a logical progression of ideas or concepts?
2. Are spelling and grammatical errors minimal?
3. Are the references of good quality?
Note that if you are providing
internet references, you might want to check out this web site first: http://www2.widener.edu/Wolfgram-Memorial-Library/webevaluation/webeval.htm It provides some sound advice on determining
if a web reference is quality or not.
4. Are
the diagrams and/or examples (if applicable) easy to understand?
5. Is the format (i.e. pagination, section heading, title page)
consistent with a journal paper?
Look at some of the journal articles in ACM, IEEE,
etc… for guidelines
6. Is the work original?
II. Does the paper target
the right audience? 10%
Your audience is assumed to be well educated and up
with current events. They are familiar
with IT in general but are not experts in any one technology.

Is the paper understandable to the average person in the audience?
2.
Is the right level of background provided?
III. Content - 60%
1. Are the ideas and concepts clearly expressed?
2. Is the technical solution fully explored?
3. Are pros and cons of the solution explained?
4. Does the paper clearly demonstrate the feasibility of this technology in the next 3-5 years?
5. Are the impacts of this technology fully explored?
6. Is the information provided accurate and relevant to the topic?
7. Does the executive summary contain only salient points of the paper and is well organized? No unnecessary information provided.
Guidelines and Grading for the Presentation
Each individual will be expected to present a portion of the paper. Presentations will be 25 minutes with two presentations done per class. Presentations will be done the week of April XXX – April XXX. This is the second to the last week of classes. We will meet the whole week with two presentations per class. Please provide a hardcopy of the presentation prior to the presentation.
Below are the main areas for which you will graded Meeting or exceeding expectations in all of these areas will result in a grade of A.
I. Preparation 20%
Is the presentation clear, too the point, and not cluttered with information?
Is the presentation readable and free of spelling/grammatical errors?
Are the presenters familiar with the slide order and content?
II. Organization. 40%
Did the presentation flow logically and consistent with the paper.
Was the content of the presentation comprehensive?
Was the presenter knowledgeable about the subject?
Did the presenter answer questions directly and to the point – did not try to fake it if the answer was not known.
Did the presenter discuss relevance of the references?
III. Presentation 40%
Did the presenter made eye contact with the audience?
Did the presenter made good use of time allotted?
Did the presenter discuss the slides and did not read from them?
