Image and Video Processing addresses the problems of acquisition, storage, retrieval, and processing of images, videos, and high dimensional signals for extraction and analysis of useful information for human users, robots, and autonomous systems. Specific problems include design and analysis of imaging sensors, high-dimensional signal representation and transformation, compression methods, image/video retrieval, 3D sensing and modeling, medical imaging, space imaging, and live video computing.
The Computational Imaging Laboratory (CIL) promotes and conducts basic and applied research in various areas of image and video processing and analysis, with emphasis on new sensors and technologies. The lab also focuses on 3D sensing, 3D modeling, and reconstruction, as well as 2D/3D visual pattern classification and recognition. CIL has active research projects funded by NASA, the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), the Navy, and the high tech industry, with applications spanning space science, defense, medical imaging, entertainment, and education. CIL is an integral part of a team at UCF who won $55M, the largest single grant in the history of UCF, for a NASA mission to explore the magnetic storms and space weather using UV imaging. Some of the ongoing research activities in CIL include compressive sensing, sparse coding, super-resolution for hyperspectral imaging, space weather forecast using ultraviolet imaging and spectroscopy, 3D modeling from aerial and ground-based video and LiDAR imagery (Geiger mode and linear), image registration for laser eye surgery, image and video annotation and retrieval, gesture and action recognition in video, and scene text recognition. The lab has active collaborations with faculty and students from the Florida Space Institute (FSI), the Institute for Simulation and Training (IST), Mathematics, Physics, and other engineering departments.
