Dean Allemang comes from a background in Artificial Intelligence, where he pioneered the application of model-based reasoning, in particular functional reasoning, to software understanding. I quickly found that the formal properties of software were relevant to this study, and in my dissertation work, I integrated a formal approach to software specification with the model-based approach to software understanding.
More reently, Dean Allemang has been involved in research on Domain Modeling for software reuse, and is a co-author of the ODM guidebook [fARSS96]. My latest work has been to integrate a formal functional understanding of software into a design-rationale capture system in the context of the DARPA EDCS programme.
