There will be a FOAL 2012 associated with MODULARITY: aosd 2012 at the Hasso-Plattner-Institute, in Potsdam, Germany on 26 March 2012. So, if you are interested in FOAL, please consider submitting a paper. Papers are due 23 December 2011. See the call for papers for details.

The 2010 workshop was a success. There were 35 attendees in the morning and 29 people attending in the afternoon. Talk slides are now linked from the agenda. Thanks to Klaus Osterman and the PC, and to the authors and presenters!

A tentative agenda for FOAL 2010 is now available. We are still working on plans for the last session (from 4:00pm to 5:pm). Don't forget to register for AOSD 2010! (Early registration ends February 22.)

A new call for position papers for FOAL 2010 has been issued. In order to stimulate discussion of new foundational ideas, we are calling for position papers of up to 5 pages, to be submitted to FOAL by January 20, 2010.

Workshops from AOSD 2010, including FOAL will not have proceedings published in the ACM digital library. The call for papers has been adjusted to reflect this.

The final session at FOAL is entitled: "Open Session: New Ideas, Open Questions, and Work in Progress," which will consist of short 3 minute presentations. Any attendees interested in posing some issues or briefly describing their ideas or ongoing work related to FOAL topics are invited to present 3 minute talks, with up to 2 slides. This is your chance to help focus the FOAL community on challenging AOSD topics that will make our future foundational work insightful, useful, and significant. If you would like to present a topic, please email the title to Shmuel Katz (katz@cs.technion.ac.il) by February 26.

Due to a slight misunderstanding, the due date recorded in the call for papers has been changed to 11:59AM GMT, 24 December 2008. Also note that authors will have a choice of putting a 1 page abstract or a five page version of their paper in the ACM Digital Library.

FOAL has been approved as a workshop of AOSD 2009 and will occur on March 2, 2009 in Charlottesville, Virginia as part of AOSD 2009. See the FOAL 2009 webpage for more information and the call for papers.

The 2008 workshop was held on Tuesday, April 1, 2008
at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Brussels, Belgium.
The proceedings for FOAL 2008
are now available. You can also access individual papers from the
agenda for FOAL 2008 online.
The workshop was attended by about 32 people.
We had a keynote from Prof. Bill Harrison of Trinity College Dublin.
We also had a panel discussion on the future of AOSD titled
"AOSD Research: In the Mainstream, A Vibrant Subfield, or a Passing Fad",
with panelists Mehmet Aksit, Oege de Moor, Gary T. Leavens, and Klaus Ostermann.
Thanks again to Curtis Clifton and the rest of the program committee
for selecting an excellent crop of papers.

The final agenda for FOAL 2008 is now available. We're pleased to have Prof. Bill Harrison of Trinity College Dublin as our keynote. We also have a panel discussion on the future of AOSD titled "AOSD Research: In the Mainstream, A Vibrant Subfield, or a Passing Fad", with panelists Mehmet Aksit, Oege de Moor, Gary T. Leavens, and Klaus Ostermann. The workshop will be April 1, 2008 at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Brussels, Campus Etterbeek. Don't forget to register for AOSD, which is necessary for attending the workshop.

The 2007 workshop was held on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at the Sheraton Wall Center in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It was attended by about 23 people in the morning and 24 in the afternoon. This year we had 11 papers submitted, and accepted 8 papers; thanks again to Shmuel Katz and the rest of the program committee for selecting an excellent crop of papers.

Formatting instructions for authors of FOAL 2007 papers are available. This gives details on copyright and formatting for accepted papers. Final versions of accepted papers are due by 23:00 GMT, 1 March 2007. Soon afterwards, attendees can check here to get their own copy of the proceedings.

FOAL 2007 has been approved as a workshop at AOSD 2007. The workshop will take place on March 13, 2007 in Vancouver, British Columbia. We are pleased to have again assembled an excellent program committee, led by Shmuel Katz. As described in the FOAL 2007 call for papers, submissions are due January 10, 2007.

The 2006 FOAL Workshop has been approved by AOSD 2006 conference organizers. So the workshop will once again by held in conjunction with the International Conference on Aspect-Oriented Software Development. We are very pleased to have Professor Mira Mezini as the chair of another excellent program committee. The call for papers is also ready.

FOAL solicits papers on all areas of formal foundations of AOP languages. Submissions are due by 16 January 2005. Please see the call for papers for details on contributing to FOAL 2005.

The early registration deadline for the AOSD conference has been pushed back to [20] Feb 2005. Because of this, the FOAL organizers have decided to extend the workshop submittal deadline. We are starting to plan for FOAL 2004, to be held at Lancaster, UK in conjunction with AOSD 2004, on March 22 or 23, 2004. Ralf Lämmel (CWI and Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam) has agreed to be the PC chair for this workshop. Gary T. Leavens and Curtis Clifton are taking on the organizational duties again this year.

FOAL 2003 was held at Northeastern University in Boston on March 17, 2003, in conjunction with AOSD 2003. The workshop was well attended and some exciting preliminary results were reported. Look for a summary article on the workshop results in the coming weeks.
